functional principle

Gel permeation chromatography (GPC), also known as size exclusion chromatography (SEC), is a technique used to separate mixtures based on their size. Separated molecules are detected by a concentration detector (conventional detection), e.g. a refractive index detector (RI), whereby the result of the size distribution refers to the calibration with the polymer standards used.

Alternatively, multiple detectors are used for detection (universal detection or triple detection with light scattering, viscometer and RI detector), which allow the calculation of the distribution of the absolute molecular weight, the molecular size and the intrinsic viscosity, as well as information on the macromolecular structure, conformation, aggregation and branching.

Typical applicationsCharacterization of natural and synthetic polymers, biopolymers, proteins and nanoparticles
