inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry

We use our ICP-MS primarily for elemental analysis and trace analysis. Trace analysis in chemistry involves detecting substances in very low concentrations or determining them quantitatively.

Semi-quantitative screen analyses are often carried out first to get an overview of the elements present (e.g. for subsequent risk analysis). If elements close to their limit values are present, a quantitative analysis can be used to determine the elements much more precisely. This is done by matrix adjustments of the calibration solutions and optimized measurement conditions.

investigation methodinductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry
abbreviationICP-MS
Device type and equipmentThermo Scientific iCAP Q
functional principleThe solubilized sample atoms are ionized. The deflection of the ions in an electric field is measured as a function of mass and charge.
Typical applicationsTrace analysis, semi-quantitative measurement of approx. 60 elements per run as standard, quantitative measurement optimized for defined elements.
detection limittypically 0.1 µg/l (element dependent)
Requirements for sampleapprox. 1g solid sample for digestion
approx. 10ml liquid sample
Accreditation / CertificationISO17025, GMP

Example applications for mass spectrometry

ICP-MS for pharmaceutical and chemical analysis

Mass spectrometry is used in the pharmaceutical and chemical industries primarily for trace analysis. It can be used as a quantitative measurement with up to 60 elements simultaneously or as a semi-quantitative measurement in the entire spectrum. It is therefore suitable for almost all types of impurities.
